On Composing: A Guest Post

I’m so excited to introduce my guest blogger! I’ve known him his entire life and I might have sat on his head at one point when he annoyed me (granted, I was three at the time and he deserved it)–my little bro, Robby!  People have been asking us questions about writing and composing; the latter I don’t have much experience on since Robby came up with all the tunes, I just co-wrote the lyrics.  I thought I’d invite him on to share his process with you all!

One Year Ago Today

One year ago today, Robby and I finished the first draft of On the Air.  It’s hard to believe it’s only been a year since we started this. So much has happened. Honestly if you told me a year ago we’d be where we are now, I would have thought you were crazy.

Actually I thought we were crazy for embarking on this journey.

LITERALLY right after we finished the first draft and submitted it to NYMF—notice the crazy eyes?

Musical Theatre Festivals

Ahhh, it’s that time of year again! I can smell it in the air; the mad dash to finish a song, finalizing last minute scene changes, the sweat, the tears, the shear panic–all ending in shear exhaustion and jubilation that you got everything in on time.

It’s Festival submission season for new writers.  For those of you unfamiliar with this tear-inducing season, it’s when many Theatre and Musical Theatre festivals open submissions for new works.  This is a prime opportunity for new writers to get your shows out there.  It’s also a great opportunity to get your works finished because–hello–deadlines!

The PiTCH (part 2)

Where to begin summarizing how amazing, useful, exhausting, eye-opening, and reaffirming an experience this has been?

The second and last nights went extremely well.  We got some great feedback! We left feeling much better on where we were with the piece and where we want to take it.  Robby and I will be working extremely hard over the next few weeks to get it ready for the industry reading.

I call this the “Family” shot.

The PiTCH (part 1)

As I am writing this post, I’m sipping some coffee and going over notes from opening night.  What a whirl wind few days it’s been!

It was a four hour drive up to Auburn, NY and we were all excited to be on our way!

On the Air: Writing a Musical – Part 2

Now, where was I? Oh yes, recording a demo. (In case you missed it, here’s part 1)

This can be a very intimidating task considering all that goes into recording.  Do we need to rent a recording studio? Who do we get to record? How much is this going to cost?

Anybody can record a demo and believe it or not, it doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg.

Robby and I invested in a mic off of Amazon.  This one to be exact.  It won’t cost you your first born child and the sound quality is pretty good.  We got a pop filter, music stand, a mac and were ready to go. We recorded the majority of the demo in my room, not some fancy recording studio.  The music stand was our mic holder.  This was the set-up (please excuse the mess, I was a shell of a human being remember?):

On the Air: Writing a Musical – Part 1

So I realized I haven’t spoken about the musical Robby and I wrote.  Ya know, that little thing I mainly started this blog for.
