Every year the bro and I try and hit up the NY Renaissance Faire. It’s an excuse to drink Mead, get Henna, and have cheesecake–on a stick.
We entered the faire with the other conglomerates of dressed up folk (although this year, the bro and I did not partake in the dressing up) shouting at you to “Be merry!” and “Good day fair lady!”. Honestly, it makes you feel very important.
Jess came along with us and dressed as a fairy for the day. Here she is being very fairy-like in the greenery.
There is a lot to see and do throughout the day. You can attend shows, shop for some interesting items, or just wander the grounds, taking it all in.
We stopped by our usual tarot card reader that we’ve been going to for the past two years now. Every time we get a reading from her she hits it–spot on. I won’t divulge the results from this year, but once again, Rosalisa hit it on the nail.
Across from Rosalisa’s stall was a tent where you could get a Henna Tatoo.
No faire day would be complete without getting some Henna.
We even convinced Robby to get one!
Alas, I forgot to take a picture of mine, but it was a small star on my wrist with shining rays.
The jousting match is always fun to watch, if you can get there early and grab some seats. They usually have two throughout the day. If you are lucky enough to grab a spot in the shade, you can watch your favorite knight compete for the honor of becoming the Queen’s Champion. Also, where else are you going to see guys up on a horse, fighting for a woman’s favor? This is one thing I wish hadn’t died out in the middle ages…very romantic, well at least until the horse goes to the bathroom right in front of you.
Wandering the faire is always a great adventure. It’s a sensory overload of colors, smells, textures and people.
You’ll never know what and who you’ll meet. People are very creative and come up with the most amazing costumes. It was time-traveler’s weekend so all bets were off.
Even Sauron showed up.
It’s great when you can just carry your pet on your shoulder.
Or just transform into one…
Everywhere you turn the old…
…is mixed with the new.
Like these costumed pirates just sipping on their Frappuccino’s.
Having satisfied our wanderlust and taken in all the amazing sights, we decided to head out, but not before Jess gave her all to pull the sword from the stone.
Alas, she was not successful.
If you’re having a yearning for some Mead or a good turkey leg, the Faire is open until Sept. 21. Check it out and hopefully I shall see you anon!
Until then, fare thee well; I must away!
