From Austin to Boston – Part 3

Our last few days in Boston were bittersweet.  We were having such a wonderful time that we didn’t want to leave!

Our second to last day was spent idling about Boston; doing some more shopping and enjoying the quaint streets.

^This door was smaller than me! I was convinced it was some magical entranceway to Hogwarts.

Meesh got a new coat that she just had to buy because really now.  I got some great workout clothes and we both refrained from buying anything in the home goods section of Marshalls.  The struggle is real.  That evening we decided to stay local and ate at Figs in Beacon Hill.  We had some of the best pizza.  Feast your eyes upon the truffle mushroom and calamari pie. It was delish.  Totally indulgent, but delish.  If you happen to be in Beacon Hill, I would strongly suggest going.  The service was great and the atmosphere was fun.  Bring friends so you can split a pie, or don’t and hoard have it all to yourself. 😉

Completely full, we decided to finally make our way over to Liberty.  We had heard such awesome things about this hotel that we knew we had to check it out.  It used to be a jail that they converted into a hotel.  Along the way we stopped to hang on pose with some lovely light posts because…why not?

I don’t know how they let such loons loose around Boston.

After much frolicking we finally made our way into Liberty for what would be a most interesting night.  We attracted some…well…interesting gentlemen to say the least.  One in particular just would not get the hint.  The bartender was stellar.  Every few minutes he would catch my eye seeing the situation and ask if we were ok.  I kept responding yes, with a smile because surely now this guy would get the point–nope! Meesh tried being nice, then firm, but polite, then finally “Dude, this is our last night here and we don’t want you around.”  He finally left with his friends and the nice bartender was ending his shift.  We ended up heading to a bar across the street and buying him a drink to say thank you.  It ended up being the highlight of the night.  Super nice guy with an interesting history who traveled the world.  You never know where your night can take you or who you’ll meet so be open to anything! At last call, we decided to head back to our hotel so we could get some shut-eye! We were doing the Freedom Trail on our final day and we needed some sleep 🙂

Meesh woke me up the following morning.  We were determined to go for a run over the Boston Marathon finish line.  We bundled up as much as we could and headed out to burn off our calamari pizza.   You could tell we weren’t true Bostonians because we were bundled to the hilt.  We saw other runners out there in shorts!

Regardless, we finished and were ready to head out on the freedom trail.

^Helloooo red face!

The start of the trail was in the Boston Common where we met this enthusiastic chap.

If you have the time, I would highly suggest doing the Freedom Trail (or the Revolutionary Walk as I dubbed it).  It’s only about 2.5 miles in total and everything is extremely close to one another.  You get to see some amazing sites such as the Massachusetts State House below…

…Sam Adams’ grave…

P1020633

…Paul Revere’s House…

P1020646

…and the Old North Church where they hung the lanterns after Paul Revere’s Ride to signal where the British were coming.  You might be familiar with it if you’ve read Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s poem The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere. “One if by land, and two if by sea…”

There were plenty of other stops along the way that you must check out.  One of the most humorous stops along the trail occurred when we were looking for the Old Corner Bookstore.  Obviously we were super excited to browse the store.  It’s where, publishers Ticknor and Fields produced the works of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson, John Greenleaf Whittier, Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr., and Louisa May Alcott.  However when we arrived to the aforementioned spot, we discovered it is now a Chipotle.  A CHIPOTLE people.  Our hearts cried a little bit.

We made our way back to our hotel to gather our things and head home.  Meesh drove the whole way and I managed to fall asleep only once:

MEESH: “Pas!”
ME: Jerking awake.  “I’m up!”
MEESH: “No you’re not, but that’s ok we’re stopping for gas.”
ME: “COFFEE.”

We listened to show tunes the rest of the way and just revelled in the fact that we had a wonderful mini vacation.  Now we just need to figure out when we’re heading to Austin…
