Cruisin’ Around: The Drive Down – Washington, DC

Most people tend to take vacations after a hectic period in their lives; a time to unwind, relax, and recharge again.  This time around, I decided to be different.  I went on a lovely vacation with my family before the hectic-ness that will await me this fall.  What can I say? I like being different.

We drove down to Florida–gasp! That tends to be the reaction I get every time I tell them, but you know what? For every Florida vacation I’ve taken in my life, I’ve always driven down.  Frankly, I enjoy it a lot more because you get to stop along the way and see some of the beautiful cities and hidden gems that the East Coast is home to.

Our first stop was Washington, D.C.  Now when I say, I’ve practically seen everything in DC over the years, I mean it.  We ended up staying away from the Mall and went to the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.  We had never been and Dad has been itching to go for awhile now.

Essentially it’s a huge hanger filled with all sorts of aircraft and flying devices used throughout history such as this iconic plane, the Enola Gay, which dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima during WW II.

Besides displaying historic aircraft, the museum also has a hanger in the back where you can watch as they restore them.

Some of these you couldn’t pay me to get on.

^Look at that seat! Or LACK thereof!

Nope, sorry.  That is nothing more than a lawn chair attached to skis.

Despite it’s dangerous and hair-raising flying devices, it turned out to be the perfect stop on our way down.

All this talk of air travel got us quite hungry so we made our way to Armand’s for some AWESOME-SAUCE Chicago style pizza.  Yes, it warrants ALL THE CAPS.  It’s THAT GOOD.  Luckily, it was open this time.  Just look at it.

Why yes, it needs a close-up.

Ugh, now I want another piece.  If you’re in the DC area, they have a few locations to choose from.  Check them out here.  You won’t regret it and your taste buds will be thanking you for it.
