I know you guys have been waiting for this post for a while now (considering the show was back in May). I’m sorry I took so long, but it’s finally here! All the things about On the Air the Workshop.
Pre-Production Life
Since we have our first rehearsal tomorrow, I thought I’d try and give a post about what pre-production has been like for this process. It’s very similar to the past incarnations where you live in a constant state of anxiety, sheer bliss, frustration, panic, and convinced that you will never finish everything in time–just multiplied by 100. Pretty much, you walk around like this:
On the Air – Workshop Production!
In case you were wondering why I’ve been so MIA lately (and this year really) it’s because of said title! On the Air will have a fully staged workshop production presented by Overtures at The Gallery Players in Brooklyn…NEXT MONTH.
The Store Under the Portico aka Musical 2!
The title is here and the first draft is DONE! Musical 2 is now “finished”. I’m laughing even as I type that because it’s never finished, but the first draft is!
“Sooo how does this work?”
This is one of the questions the bro and I constantly get asked whenever we meet with someone about the show.
Person looks at us, gestures back and forth and asks, “Sooo how does this work?”
Which Came First: the Book or the Song?
Currently, the bro and I are doing a Christmas show out in Bristol, PA for the month. It’s a great little gig, with some fantastic people. Most of the rehearsals are at night however, so we’ve taken this opportunity as a mini writer’s retreat and trying to write/finish Musical 2 (for lack of a title). It takes place in Italy during WWII, specifically toward the end of the war and the northern occupation. It’s a fascinating topic and one that most people haven’t really explored. It’s one even I’m learning about as we continue to research and write.
We’re slowly getting through it (we’re up to about 4 scenes in Act 1) and we have to finish the whole show by the end of the month for a deadline.
Writer’s Block is a Real Thing
If you’re a writer, then at some point in your life you’ve encountered the dreaded writer’s block. Hell, if you’ve written a school essay you’ve encountered it.
It’s real. It’s horrible. It sucks.
It happened to me the other day and I was quite surprised by it. I know. You must be thinking, “Ummm Cristina, this is nothing new to you right?”
On the Air Reading at The York – Recap
So as I am writing this post, I realize that we finished writing On the Air two years ago, last week. Two years sounds like so long and so short a time. It’s crazy to think how far we’ve come and how much we still have yet to do, but that’s the amazing part of this whole process!
I needed a few days to “detox” and recover from this latest reading. I took a week off blogging and feel so much better about it. The whole month of October was a bit of a whirlwind, to be honest. I mentioned it before, but the casting process was insane. We were down to the very last minute with a few of these roles. We couldn’t be happier with the cast we got though! So encouraging, hard working, and just the nicest group of people. You can read all about them here.
A Reading at The York
So like the title says, we’ll be doing a reading of On the Air at The York Theatre—next week!
As you can imagine, I’ve had no life. Between re-writes, casting, and also directing at my old HS, I’ve barely had time to breath.
